The exhibition at the Museum of Caricature will present famous portraits by such artists as Picasso, van Gogh, Rembrand, Velazques and others interpreted in an unusual way by Wrocław artist caricaturist Tomasz Broda. Broda's seemingly ordinary things take on unusual features – balloons become noses, buttons work as eyes, scraps form a bouquet of sunflowers, and a hat is used for a pair of water boots. They intrigue and delight with their originality. On the one hand, unique, on the other strikingly similar to its prototype.
Carefully selected and stacked materials make each composition perfectly reflect the characteristics of the appearance of the presented character. Consistency adds a phonetic, simplified record of the names of masters of painting, such as Pikaso, Wangog, Sleuth, Rębrant, Rubęs, Gog and Łorhol, which co-exist with simple components of the works.Works come from the artist's private collection.
Tomasz Broda was born in 1967 in Kalisz. Studied in the State High Art School in Wrocław (now the Academy of Fine Arts). He graduated with distinction in 1992 in graphic design under prof. Jan Jaromir Aleksiun. He works as cartoonist, book and press illustrator, stage designer. Published his works among others in „Gazeta Wyborcza”, „Rzeczpospolita”, „Przekrój”, „Odra”. He creates masks on his own face using everyday objects. He presented those masks in tv programmes, among others in 'Evening with Jagielski", in the German version of 'Sezame Street' and in his own programme 'Make yourself a Face'. He is teaching illustration at the Wrocław Academy of Fine Arts. Awarded seven times at the International Festival 'Satyrykon' (Grand Prix in 1997, Gold Medal in 1993, 2006 and 2014 ). Awarded among others 'Award for the Illustrator in the Polish Section of IBBY in the Book of the Year Competition in 2008. Obtained an Award from the Mayor of Wroclaw in 2000. www.tomaszbroda.pl
