The new exhibiton in our Museum of Caricature will be a retrospective of distinguished artist, cartoonist, caricaturist and painter – Karol Ferster (1902-1986) known as „Charlie”.
Karol Ferster has always been considered as one of the gentle caricaturists, and his style was described as „mild persuasion”. His main interest was social satire but he did not avoid political satire either. He made his debut before the 2nd WW and his works were widely admired and published in many Polish newspapers and magazines till the 1980s. One of the most notorious characters created by Ferster was grotesque reactionary August Becwalski, who appeared weekly on the pages of „Przekroj”. Karol Ferster was awarded many prizes and awards, among which were the Golden Pin (zlota szpilka) and Golden Pin with Laurel (zlota szpilka z wawrzynem) – the most prestigious awards that could be presented to a caricaturist. In 1999, Serafina, Karol’s widow, donated some 3200 original works by her husband to the Museum of Caricature. It is the biggest collection of Ferster’s work in Poland. The chosen artworks from the collection will be on display in our Museum from November 2012 till January 2013.
