Virtues, also called basic Moral Values have existed as a solid foundation since ancient times. They showed people the path to follow, from the ancient philosophy, through Middle Ages (St Augusin) till present day. In practice however, people's behaviour usually has been and is today different to the quidelines. Through freedom of our own interpretation the Virtues take various forms, often completely different to the starting point, becoming caricatures of themselves. Rafał Olbiński's idea, was to show that particular aspect of Virtues in his paintings and drawings on the subject. Obviously it doesn't mean that by seeing the caricatural side of our own interpretation of Basic Values, he himself created typical caricatures. His images are primarily symbolic and address the questions about morality and a purpose of life, and in a specific way, worn us against that caricatural interpreatation!.
In November and December 2005, the weekly Stern published a series of essays and articles illustrated by Rafał Olbiński entitled - 'New longing for the old values'. The names of the seven traditional virtues have been modernised and are now: 'Sincerity and Honesty', 'Justice', 'Responsibility and Sense of Duty', 'Respect and Good Manners', 'Civil Courage', 'Fidelity and Trust'.
