MASTER AND MARGARITA
Tomasz Jura & Małgorzata Lazarek

I think that the tiltle of our exhibition Master and Margarita will provoque inevitably some questions about the connection to Mihail Bulhakhov's novel. The answer is quite suprising. Apart from the same title, there is no connection whatsovever. The interdependence of Bulhakov's characters is obvious: Margarita blindly believes in her Master and is prepared to follow him evento Hell, but as far as Master is concerned, he has undisputed moral authority, being a spiritual leader and even partner. The situation for the authors of our exhibition is different. They are both fully "independent, self governed and sovereign" to quote a popular slogan.

Tomasz Jura is an undisputable Master of drawing and graphic art but also a lecturer to many generations of artists, graduates of Katowice Academy of Fine Arts, among them Malgorzata Lazarek.

He never suggested to his students his own, original way of seeing the world. It applies to both aerias - philosophicaly-symbolic and purly formal. But it seems obvious that certain elements of each of the aerias penetrated and keep penetrating the artworks of his studets

One can see them in the works of Malgorzata Lazarek, though her original individuality is clearly defined and very suggestively articulated.

Tomasz Jura, is mainly the Master of a line drawing, though colour is sometimes present in his work. His student on another hand, has a typical painter's character. The Professor, perfectionist in his graphical solutions, loves above all erotic meanings and suggestions. Malgosia's subtle, poetic imagination creates sometimes very unusual combinations of colour and composition.

There is one thing common to both of them, the professor and the student - their sense of humour and the capacity of transforming the often boring and down to earth reality into real fireworks of satire, humour and symbolic methaphors.

Tomasz Jura accepts diplomas in Caricature at the Academy of Fine Art in Katowice, where he teaches (another example who does the same can be only Janusz Stanny). He has great ability in spotting real talents among his students, and fishes out some rare pearls, who see the world and our reality with the the real sense of humour. That was the case of Malgorzata Lazarek. She is a discovery on the big scale. Charm, lightness of form, poetical symbolism and synthetic illustration - all those things allow us to consider her as one of the greatest artists of humour of the new generation. Malgorzata is still traveling along her artistic way, but her achievements so far, allow us to think, that there will be more successes on her way in the future.

The aim of our exhibition is a confrontation of generations - the "Master" - Jura and "Margarita" - Lazarek. There are no winners in this confrontation, both the Master and his disciple are great artists. I am convinced that the presentation of their works will be a good lesson of humour for everybody. The lesson enriched by the sensitivity of both artists and and their artistic professionalism.
