Andrzej Dudziński - born 14 December 1945 in Sopot - is a painter, graphic artist and photographer, poster and book cover designer, stage set designer, co-author (with his wife) and illustrator of children's books. Initially studied architecture at Gdańsk Polytechnic (1966-68), then interior design and graphics at the Higher School of Plastic Arts in Gdańsk and graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in the atelier of professor Henryk Tomaszsewski (1968-70). While still a student his works appeared in the monthly Polska, and the weeklies Szpilki and Kultura. In London in 1970-72, he cooperated with the 'underground' magazines Oz, Ink, Frendz, Time Out, My Fair, and Game. In the early 70s his bird 'Dudi' appeared in Szpilki every week, became a sensational hit with readers. He also cooperated regularly with periodicals and journals: Literatura, Kulisy, Polityka, Ty i Ja.
He went to the USA in 1977 for an international conference of graphic artists in Aspen, Colorado, and decided to stay, settling in New York. In 1982-90 he lectured at the Parsons School of Design in New York and began cooperating with leading American periodicals like The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly, The Boston Globe, Newsweek, Playboy, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, The Washington Post, Time. He published his work in European publications, and after a long break, in the Polish press - Gazeta Wyborcza, Polityka, Rzeczpospolita, and Tygodnik Powszechny, in which in 1992-98, Pokrak was a regular visitor - a creature on rickety legs drawn with his left hand. He has done numerous projects for firms like AT&T, Conde Nast, Deutsche Telekom, IBM, Royal Bank of Scotland. He has won numerous prizes and distinctions at home and abroad (including the 'Bronze Pin' in 1973). He has taken part in several dozen exhibitions, joint exhibitions of drawings, graphics and paintings worldwide, and numerous one-man exhibitions (Warsaw, £ód¼, Gdańsk, Sopot, Kraków, London, New York, Hamburg, Geneva, Prague). Currently he is lecturer at the Higher School of Visual Arts and New Media in Warsaw. He was given honorary citizenship of Sopot in 2001, and in July 2005 will have a 'Bench of Fame' in the Avenue of Masters of Polish Caricature in Ustronie Morskie.
