The creation of SPAK was initiated in 1978 by late Eryk Lipiński. The new association of caricaturists and cartoon artists was quite different from other similar organisations existing in Poland at that time. The first SPAK's congress, when the association was created, was attended by more than 100 people, among them many well known artists of caricature. The first president of SPAK was Eryk Lipiński. The following presidents were Zbigniew Jujka, Maciej Pietrzyk and Jacek Frankowski (the current president).
There are about hundred seventy members at the moment. Unfortunately many of them are not active anymore. There are no sponsors, so the financial possibilities of the association are limited. The rare meetings take place in the Museum of Caricature. New members after having presented their portfolios are occasionally admitted by a special Artistic Jury, chosen on each of the meetings. For the last few years, SPAK has been giving awards - Eryks (the bronze statuette, commemorating Eryk Lipiński). Every two-three years SPAK organises an exhibition, aiming to present works of all its members. (See the exhibition section of our website). Since 2002 SPAK and the Town Cultural Centre in Ustonie Morskie have been jointly organising summer workshops for artists, which are part of International Artistic Workshops MORKA (the name of a light, refreshing sea breeze). Every years, at the begining of the Workshops, the post-competition exhibition "Papkinada" takes place, "sponsored" by the quotation from Aleksander Fredro's "Vengeance" (Zemsta) - every year a different one. At the end of the Workshops, there is always another exhibition of cartoons and satirical drawings (seaside and holiday theme). SPAK MANAGEMENT Board of Administration list of SPAK members
